how to fix a furnace

Furnace not working try these steps.

The sequence of operation for a gas furnace outlines the step-by-step process that occurs when the furnace receives a call for heat. Understanding this sequence can help in troubleshooting furnace issues. Here is a general sequence of operation for a gas furnace

  1. Thermostat Call for Heat- The thermostat detects a lower temperature than the setpoint and sends a signal to the furnace to start the heating process.
  2. Inducer Motor Activation- The inducer motor starts running near the burner assembly. It creates a draft to ensure proper venting and removes combustion byproducts from the heat exchanger.
  3. Pressure Switch Check- The pressure switch, a safety device, verifies sufficient airflow in the venting system. If the pressure switch detects an issue, it will prevent the furnace from continuing the ignition sequence.
  4. Ignition Process- There are typically two types of ignition processes in gas furnaces:
    a. Pilot Ignition-  Older furnaces may have a standing pilot light. When the thermostat calls for heat, the pilot light ignites the burners, and the gas valve opens to provide a flame for heating.
    b. Electronic Ignition- Most modern furnaces utilize an electronic ignition system, either a hot surface igniter or an intermittent pilot. These ignition systems provide an electric spark or a hot surface to ignite the burners when the gas valve opens.
  5. Burner Operation- Once the burners are ignited, they produce a controlled flame that heats the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger transfers heat to the passing air, distributed throughout the ductwork and into the living spaces.
  6. Blower Activation- The motor, driven by a fan belt or a direct drive system, starts running to circulate the heated air through the ductwork and into the rooms. The blower motor is typically controlled by a limit switch that monitors the temperature of the heat exchanger to ensure safe operation.
  7. Thermostat Satisfied- When the temperature reaches the setpoint on the thermostat, it signals the furnace to shut off the burners and stop the heating process.

To troubleshoot a gas furnace, follow these steps:

  1. Check Power and Gas Supply- Ensure the furnace has power and the gas supply is turned on. Check the circuit breaker panel and reset any tripped breakers. Verify that the gas valve is open.
  2. Inspect the Thermostat- Check the settings and ensure it is set to heat mode and the desired temperature. Replace the batteries if needed.
  3. Check the Air Filter- A dirty or clogged air filter can restrict airflow, causing issues generally, such as a furnace short cycling or running for a few minutes and then shutting down. Remove and inspect the air filter, cleaning or replacing it as necessary. ( Do not double-filter your system)
  4. Verify the Thermostat Call- Confirm that the thermostat is sending a signal for heat by increasing the setpoint temperature several degrees higher than the current room temperature. If there is a call for heat, you will see 24V between W (Heat Circuit)  and C (24VFurnace board Neutral Circuit) on the Furnace board.
  5. Check for Error Codes- Some furnaces have LED indicator lights that display error codes. Consult the furnace's manual to decode any error messages.
  6. Inspect Venting and Exhaust: Check the venting system for obstructions or blockages. Ensure that the exhaust pipes are clear and properly connected.
  7. Safety Switches and Controls- Inspect and test safety switches such as pressure, limit, and rollout switches. Ensure they are functioning correctly and not causing the furnace to shut down prematurely. ( some will have a red button on them; Push them in to reset them)
  8. Call a Professional- If the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, or if you're unsure about performing further diagnostics, contact a licensed HVAC technician for professional assistance. They have the expertise and tools to diagnose and repair furnace problems accurately.

Remember, gas furnaces involve handling natural gas and electricity, so it's best to consult if you're uncomfortable or uncertain about any troubleshooting aspect.

Signs Your Furnace May Need Replacement:

Expert Insights from Metropolitan HVAC LLC

As the backbone of your home's heating system, your furnace keeps you warm and comfortable during the colder months. However, like any mechanical system, furnaces have a finite lifespan and may eventually require replacement to maintain optimal performance and efficiency. At Metropolitan HVAC LLC, we understand the importance of a reliable heating system, and we're here to help you recognize the signs that it may be time to consider a furnace replacement.

1. Age of the Furnace

One of the primary indicators that your furnace may need replacement is its age. Most furnaces have a lifespan of 15-20 years with proper maintenance. If your furnace is nearing or past this age range, it's prudent to consider replacement options, as older furnaces are more prone to breakdowns and inefficiencies.

2. Increased Energy Bills

Have you noticed a sudden spike in your energy bills without a corresponding increase in usage? This could indicate that your furnace is losing efficiency and struggling to maintain the desired temperature. Older furnaces become less efficient, increasing energy consumption and operating costs.

3. Frequent Repairs

Are you constantly scheduling repairs for your furnace? While minor repairs are common and expected as furnaces age, frequent breakdowns and costly repairs can be a red flag. As a general rule, if the cost of repairs exceeds 50% of the value of a new furnace, it may be more cost-effective to invest in a replacement.

4. Uneven Heating or Poor Air Quality

Do you notice uneven heating throughout your home or experience issues with indoor air quality, such as excessive dust or dry air? These could indicate underlying problems with your furnace, including ductwork issues, airflow restrictions, or a failing heat exchanger. A new, properly sized furnace can help improve comfort levels and indoor air quality.

5. Strange Noises or Odors

Unusual noises such as banging, rattling, or squealing from your furnace should not be ignored. Similarly, foul odors such as burning or musty odors could indicate serious issues with your furnace, including mechanical failures or safety hazards. If you notice any unusual sounds or smells emanating from your furnace, it's essential to have it inspected by a professional technician promptly.
